Initially Mark van der Staay manifests himself as a painter. He exhibits since 2003 in galleries and art-fairs in the Netherlands and Belgium, In the year 2006 his work becom-ces more conceptual, he works more on a project basis and also realizes dimensional works.

Writer/critic Frans van der Veen about his work,  "His track record reveals a large gluttony in exploring the various facets of the visual arts. It is characterized by a serial study of form and content and the coherence between them".

Along with familiar  themes such as death, love and loneliness, is the theme of repetition vicible in the oilpaintings of Peter van der Veen. Accordint the artist, life is a repetition. The trick is, to get a certain dynamic within that repetition. This dynamic he likes to paint. The compositions are spontaneously painted, he never makes sketches. One painting

leads to another. He uses colourfull patterns, wich are scattererd like confetti across the canvas. These patterns ensure dynamism, within the painting there is rhytm. Peter van der Veen is a member of the CBK Drenthe and Chairman of Take 5.
